Newchurch 2000 Award Scheme

The Newchurch 2000 Award Scheme was instigated by the late Libby Baxter to mark the arrival of the Millennium within our parish.

The Newchurch Award for 2022

The Newchurch Award for 2022 goes to Brenda Wimble for her long service to the Village. Brenda Newchurch_award_2022.png has served on the Village Hall Committee for many years and was Vice Chair for several years, being a huge support to the Chairman, giving up a lot of her time obtaining quotes for various different projects, and overseeing maintenance works.

Brenda is also secretary to the Newchurch Woman's Institute, helping to arrange different events and outings. How many cakes have been baked?.... Who knows. Always supporting both the Church and Village Hall coffee mornings as well as many other fund raising cake stalls. For all of this, your knowledge, support and words of wisdon, we thank you.

The Scheme has two objectives:Village_award_board_2020.jpg

  1. To annually mark and reward a resident of the parish who has, through their own time, effort and skills, made a significant contribution over a number of years, to the life and facilities of our community. It is no surprise that winners are often drawn from the Parish Council, the PCC, the Village Hall and Social Club committees along with the many other Village organisations.

  2. To provide grants available to assist worthy causes and projects within our community which are a benefit to all. We have a great communal spirit in our sparsely populated parish and this scheme recognises and fosters that spirit.

How is it operated?

Every year in December a small committee of past winners, currently chaired by Helen Langrish, consider nominated candidates and elect a winner for the past year.

There is a small monetary award and the winners name is added to the Honours Board in the Village Hall Community Room.

Anyone can make a nomination by emailing webmaster@newchurchvillage.org.

Libby Baxter

The Newchurch 2000 Award Scheme is one of several projects instigated by Libby Baxter, herself a great contributor to our community.

Other projects that she is instigated at the time of the Millennium were:

The Millennium Name plaques

One was made for every house in the village and you may notice these green personalised ‘2000` name plaques on many of the houses.

The Spinney

At the junction of Newchurch Lane with the Bilsington road, a quiet place to sit or walk the dog, planted with natural tree species.
