On 11th September 1940, a hurricane piloted by Pilot Officer Arthur Clarke crashed into a field near Rooklands Farm. The 20 year old pilot was shot down by a Messerschmitt while attempting to attack a group of 30 enemy bombers. His remains have been left undisturbed and this headstone was erected in his memory, close to the crash site, many years later when his identify was confirmed. On 5th May 1944, Pilot Officer Dickie Lean crashed during a routine test flight over Kingsnorth. Experts recovered the remains of his plane in September 1989.
