Newchurch Advanced Landing Ground Memorial
The Newchurch ALG Memorial was unveiled on Saturday 23rd September 2017
It was a beautiful September day and, coincidentally, seventy three years to the day that the squadrons left Newchurch for the last time in 1944.
In attendance were families of veterans who flew from Newchurch, the commanding officer and standard party from 56 SQN RAF from Waddington, members of local branches of the British Legion and veterans associations with their standards (see below), local squadrons of the RAF Air Cadets along with their band and a large number of villagers. The ceremony was conducted by The Rev (Sqn Ldr) Matthew Buchan and the memorial was unveiled by Mrs Jennifer Rose, the wife of the late Flt Sgt Morris Rose 3(F) SQN RAF. Morris Rose was a pilot based at Newchurch who was credited with shooting down the first V1 flying bomb in daylight.
It seemed appropriate that the past, present and future were represented to honour the service men and women who were based here at Newchurch between 1943 and 1944.
