The Cost of Living

We are grateful to Mr & Mrs Gordon Wimble for giving us their grocery book from 1970.

In those days, Mr Stanger from the MACE store in Bilsington would collect your order and deliver. Coopers the Butchers from Aldington would deliver the meat order and Ray Fagg, bread and cakes. It goes without saying that the milk was delivered by the milkman.

How things have turned full circle! Long after these deliveries stopped, the supermarkets will now deliver your complete food order to your door.

Notice in the picture a reminder of the things that a grocer used to sell. The modern generation, now accustomed to Supermarkets, forget that the grocer only sold the items for the "craft" of the kitchen.

Below are two analyses of the shopping basket on that day in 1970.

First is a comparison of the cost of each item in decimal money along with what it actually costs today.

Secondly, a comparison of what you might expect to pay as a result of normal inflation over the years and what it actually costs today.
