Lighting the Beacon - Her Majesty The Queen's 90th Birthday Celebrations
Villages around the country were invited to light their Beacons on the 21st April 2016 in celebration of the 90th Birthday of Her Majesty The Queen.
Newchurch Village started the evening of celebration in the Social Club with an illustrated history talk by Mr John Apps, father of the current Parish Council Chairman, Mr Trevor Apps.
Special Celebration Fairy Cakes, baked by a number of villagers, were offered to all attending.
The Union Jack at the St George's Cross flags were flown on the day - the poles were added to the village sign especially for the occasion.
Mr John Apps talked about his memories of Newchurch and showed some very interesting slides that were taken in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. A keen photographer, Mr Apps had been the Herd Manager at the Brooker Farms Pig Unit for 35 years and captured daily life on the farm along with floods, storms and snow drifts that beset the Village from time to time.
After the talk, everyone moved to the Spinney, where the Parish Council provided Hot Dogs cooked by Alison and Paul Prentice. These were most welcome with the keen northerly wind blowing at the time.
The Beacon was lit at 8.30pm and the villagers sang both verses of the National Anthem. This was followed by a firework display organised by Paul Prentice and Kevin Shaw. After the fireworks many returned to the Social Club to toast Her Majesty the Queen.
An invitation outlining the programme of events was delivered to every resident of Newchurch.
