Newchurch 2000 Award Scheme

The Newchurch 2000 Award Scheme was instigated by the late Libby Baxter to mark the arrival of the Millennium within our parish.

The Newchurch Award was presented to Gillian Apps who does a lot for the village, mostly carried out 'under the radar'.  She spends time making sure everything is tip top for others and spends hours and hours dealing with the village hall and social club.  She organised new windows, doors and floors and also painted the walls for the hall.  She has been heavily involved in the Panto both acting on stage, guiding the young dancers and painting the odd bit of scenery.  She also dedicated a day a week helping to run the toddler group, until its closure.  All this while being a dedicated mother, grandmother and wife.  Well done and Thank You Gillian.

Special Award

This year the 'special award' was also presented.  This has only been presented on a few previous occasions, usually for the dedication and drive for a specific project.  This year the special award goes to Andrew Cragg, who was the lead organiser for the unveiling of the ALG memorial.  This event brought people of all ages together and left us with a memorial that is a constant reminder of Newchurch Village's place in history. Andrew even managed to get us our own parachute display by the RAF Falcons. The whole event went without a hitch and a great time was had by all. So, a well-deserved winner of this special award.

The Scheme has two objectives:Award_Boards_2018.jpg

  1. To annually mark and reward a resident of the parish who has, through their own time, effort and skills, made a significant contribution over a number of years, to the life and facilities of our community. It is no surprise that winners are often drawn from the Parish Council, the PCC, the Village Hall and Social Club committees along with the many other Village organisations.

  2. To provide grants available to assist worthy causes and projects within our community which are a benefit to all. We have a great communal spirit in our sparsely populated parish and this scheme recognises and fosters that spirit.

Libby Baxter

The Newchurch 2000 Award Scheme is one of several projects instigated by Libby Baxter, herself a great contributor to our community.

Other projects that she is instigated at the time of the Millennium were:

The Millennium Name plaques

One was made for every house in the village and you may notice these green personalised ‘2000` name plaques on many of the houses.

The Spinney

At the junction of Newchurch Lane with the Bilsington road, a quiet place to sit or walk the dog, planted with natural tree species.
