In Memoriam

Arthur William Clark

On 11th September 1940, a hurricane piloted by Pilot Officer Arthur Clarke crashed into a field near Rooklands Farm. The 20 year old pilot was shot down by a Messerschmitt while attempting to attack a group of 30 enemy bombers. His remains have been left undisturbed and this headstone was erected in his memory, close to the crash site, many years later when his identify was confirmed.  You can read the story of Pilot Officer Arthur Clarke whose memorial is located in the village.
